“Can I have a fire pit in my backyard?” So many people want to know the rules about an open fire at home. Gathering around a crackling backyard fire pit can be the perfect way to enjoy a family night or waste away a few hours with friends.

But open burns aren’t allowed in all areas, regardless of how well you contain the open flames. Therefore, it is crucial to check local laws to determine the local ordinances in your area regarding the burning of materials. Keep reading to learn the rules about how to enjoy backyard fires.

Types of Backyard Fires

There are several types of backyard fires, some not in a backyard fire pit. You can also have an open fire from a barbeque grill or barbeque pit, which requires fire safety and obeying fire pit laws.

Recreational Fires

The definition of recreational fires varies by location, but all areas have some commonalities. For example, a recreational fire can be for pleasure, cooking, celebrations, ceremonial, religion, or warmth.

Recreational fires use standard fuel – tinder, kindling, wood – and burn in an open area, such as a bonfire, fire pit, or campfire. You can reduce particle pollution – a mixture of fine particles and the gases in the smoke – by using dry, seasoned wood with a 20% moisture content.

However, check your area’s rules for regulations on the fire size and the distance the fire has to be from structures. Most fire codes allow for a burn area no larger than three feet wide and two feet tall.

Open Fires

Open fires are when the smoke goes into the air without passing through a chimney or structure. Many municipalities, including New York City, have a ban on open burning. Fire pits can also classify as open fires, although more locations allow these because the fire stays off the ground.

Before setting an open fire, check with your county government for burn bans and permit requirements. Most open fires require a burn permit, also a need for non-recreational fires used for yard waste disposal.

A fire marshal or your local fire department can give you safety tips on setting an open fire safely. Keep a fire extinguisher or garden hose nearby and stay safe from the open flames to keep the fire under control.

You Might Also Be Wondering: Can I put a Fire Pit on my Deck?

Barbecue Grills and Pits

Food cooked on barbecue grills or in barbecue pits helps infuse your food with the taste and aroma of smoke. And it’s allowed in all areas, granted you keep 15 feet from hazards like flammable materials and structures. Natural gas and LP grills and pits need ten feet of free space.

You can start a barbecue grill and cook with various fuel sources, including charcoal, natural gas or propane, or wood lit with lighter fluid. Charcoal is a less preferred method due to becoming coals, which can be deceptive about looking extinguished.

Fire Pits

Fire pits allow better safety and often meet fire district fire codes. However, the local ordinances regarding the operation and allowance of fire pits vary greatly by location.

For a fire pit to be acceptable for your backyard, it needs a fuel area under 3’ in diameter and 2’ in height.

Natural gas pits must be at least 10’ from all burning hazards. And portable pits need a larger clearance of 15 feet or more.

Local Laws and Regulations

The answer to can I build a fire in my backyard will change by where you live, the air quality, and environmental conditions. Dry climates with a proneness to wildfires have stricter rules regarding backyard burning.

Local laws also dictate the ordinances for the safe distance away from buildings or structures – 20 to 30 feet in most areas.

There may also be a requirement for the size of your fire. Anything under a 3’ diameter and height is typically a recreational fire and doesn’t require a permit.

However, if you want to burn yard debris, leaves, storm cleanup, construction cleanup, and other industrial purposes, it’s best to talk to a fire marshal or your local fire department.

What is a Burn Ban?

Burn bans are temporary restrictions that forbid a fire started by an open flame. It also applies to material that can cause uncontained ember release.

Burn bans usually go into place during drought or during the threat or existence of wildfires. Poor air quality and high air pollution can also cause a burn ban to go into effect.

Violations of a burn ban can result in monetary fines, legal actions, or jail time, depending on your local guidelines. Activities that can be off-limits during a prohibition include:

Bonfires

Campfires

Fire rings or pits

Burn barrels

Field burning

Burning debris

Campfire Rules and Regulations

Campfires often have unique rules and regulations compared to other backyard fire types. So if you want a campfire in your backyard, first make sure you’re not under a burn ban or need a permit.

Your campfire site should be at least 15 feet from any structure or potential fire hazards. It’s also important to use seasoned wood.

There also might be regulations on the size of your fire – height and width – and how you keep it contained. The type of accelerant – a flammable liquid that makes the fire flare up – can also vary by area.

Fire Pit Laws

You also have to consider the regulations regarding using fire pits in your backyard. A fire pit is acceptable as long as you follow some safety precautions.

Fire codes allow you to use a fire pit with a fuel area no larger than 3 feet wide by 2 feet tall. There may also be special rules about the materials, height from the ground, and if you must keep your pit covered. Your municipal government can help you with the specifics.

Backyard Fire Pit Safety Tips

Fires destroy thousands of acres of land annually, harming ecosystems, wildlife habitats, and even human domains. Understanding standard fire safety can save you from being a statistic.

As of June 2022, there have been over 27,000 wildfires in the US, destroying over 1.9 million acres.

According to FEMA, out of 354,000 residential fires in 2019, 7.7% occurred from unintentional or careless acts, and 4.3% were due to open flames.

A few general safety tips for fire pit use include:

Clear the area around your pit of any flammable materials like leaves, paper, sticks, etc.

Don’t use gasoline, lighter fluid or any other type of petroleum-based accelerant to start or feed your fire.

Never leave your fire unattended and make sure it’s fully extinguished before you go to bed or leave the area.

Be mindful of local conditions that could cause your fire to spread, like high winds.

Have a plan for what you’ll do if your fire gets out of control.Keep a water source close by in case you need to put out the fire quickly.

How to Put Out a Fire

Always extinguish a fire before leaving it unaccompanied. Embers can hide under the char and coals, giving the appearance of the fire being out only to blaze back up if the wind blows.

If you want to let your fire go out naturally, stop adding accelerant one hour before you want to put the fire out. Instead, use a fire poker, shovel, or another long utensil to move the fire debris around so that the coals don’t touch any large pieces of wood.

Then if you want the fire out quickly, you can spray the area with water, preferably using a hose and a spray nozzle. A direct stream of water can cause sparks to spread. Stir the remains once more to make sure everything gets saturated.

You can also cover smoldering embers with sand or dirt for metal fire pits or fires that you can’t reach with a water hose.

A final method of putting out a backyard fire is with a snuffer. Many fire pits come with snuffers – lids – which suffocate the fire.

What Can You Burn?

When wondering can I have a fire pit in my backyard, you also want to know what materials you can burn.

It’s safe to burn natural materials like dried untreated wood, grass clippings, and yard debris, like sticks and twigs. You can also use fire starters like tinder, firewood, starter logs, and lighter fluid.

However, don’t burn construction waste, garbage, green wood, plastic, or chemicals. Animal remains, manure, plastic, rubber, or wood that is rotted, moldy, diseased, wet, or with glue or isn’t full – particle board or plywood – also is not safe, even for outdoor burning.

Finally, you can’t burn household trash – foam, cardboard, aerosol cans, or products with colored ink on wrappers, magazines, or boxes. And never start a fire with gasoline or oil.

Conclusion:

While a backyard fire pit seems like so much fun, knowing the laws and regulations for backyard burning can save you from costly fines or legal penalties.

It’s also super important that you take care to follow best practices for safety to avoid any accidents.

It’s wise to invest a bit of time to create an area that adheres to all the fire regulations and safety suggestions before using your fire pit, so you can relax and enjoy your time around the fire knowing you are prepared.

If you’re like most people, you enjoy spending time in your backyard. But if you don’t stay on top of things, it can quickly become an overgrown, cluttered mess. Today we’ll show you how to clean your backyard fast.

How Do I Clean Up My Backyard?

Your backyard is a mess. You know it, and your neighbors know it.

Weeds are taking over and random junk is everywhere.

The biggest challenge many people face when trying to clean up their backyard is knowing where to start. With so much to do, it can be difficult to know where to begin.

Even if you get started, you’re worried that you don’t have a plan to follow-thru and make sure the project gets completed.

The good news is that you can clean up your backyard in just a weekend with the right plan and a little effort.

Let us show you how!

This post may contain affiliate links for your convenience. We only include brands we use and trust. See the full disclosure in the privacy policy.

1. Assess the situation

The first step in cleaning up your backyard is to assess the situation. This means taking a look at what needs to be done and making a plan of action.

If you’re not sure where to start, it might be helpful to divide the backyard into zones. This will help you focus on one area at a time and make the process less overwhelming.

Some common zones include:

The lawn

Flower beds and walkways

Garbage and debris

Structures (deck, patio, shed, pool etc.)

Once you’ve identified the zones, it’s time to make a list of what needs to be done in each one. This will be your roadmap for the weekend.

2. Gather Your Tools

Having the right tools and equipment is essential when cleaning up your backyard. This includes things like:

Protective gloves (you’ll thank me later)

Rakes

Shovels

Lawn mower

String trimmer

Leaf blower

Hedge Trimmer or Shears

Broom

Outdoor Garbage Bags

Garden Cart (optional, but super handy)

Power washer

If you don’t currently have all of these items on hand, consider purchasing a few that you know you will use for weekly maintenance.

Landscaping tools are a wise investment that will make backyard cleanup a breeze.

3. Remove Large Debris

Once you’ve gathered your tools, one of the first things to do is start removing large debris from your yard. This includes things like:

Fallen branches

Rocks and stones that are in the way

Large sticks

Unwanted brush and shrubs

Use a rake or shovel to gather the debris into a pile.

From here you can either load the debris into your garden cart or wheel barrow so you can take it to the dump or rent a wood chipper or compost shredder and turn it all into mulch to use in your yard or garden.

This is also a great time to start a compost pile.

A compost pit is a great way to reduce your waste and create rich soil for your lawn and garden. Simply toss worn-out foliage, food scraps, fallen leaves and grass clippings into the pit and watch it magically turn into compost over time. Your lawn and garden beds will thank you.

4. Clean-Up Garbage

It’s amazing how quickly garbage can pile up in the backyard.

This is especially true during the winter months. It’s like the backyard and patio suddenly turn into the perfect place to store items you need to dispose of, but don’t want to deal with right away.

Take some time to walk around your yard and remove anything that doesn’t belong.

This can include things like:

Old and broken children’s toys

Scraps of wood or metal

Broken patio furniture

Recyclables

Pet toys

Above ground pools (that are beyond repair)

Don’t forget to also check under the deck or patio furniture for any hidden garbage.

Once you’ve gathered all of the trash, take care of it right away so it doesn’t continue to sit around and clutter your yard.

Not only does garbage make your backyard look messy, it’s also a great way to attract pests like raccoons and skunks.

Place smaller items into garbage bags for your regular yard waste pick up and load larger items to be taken to the dump.

Check your local Waste Management guidelines for what items can and cannot be disposed of in your regular garbage pick up.

5. Clear the Weeds

Weeds are one of the most common problems people face when trying to maintain a clean backyard. They seem to grow overnight and can quickly take over flower beds, walkways, and even the lawn.

There are a few ways to deal with weeds:

Hand pulling

Hand pulling is the most time-consuming and labor-intensive option, but it’s also the cheapest.

If you have a lot of weeds or don’t want to use weed killer, this might be your best bet. When pulling weeds by hand, make sure to get the entire root so it doesn’t just grow back.

Weed Eater

A weed eater, also known as a string trimmer, is a great way to quickly remove weeds from your yard.

It’s especially effective on larger areas.

We love this option since using a good weed trimmer will instantly make your backyard look and feel cleaner and appealing in a matter of minutes.

Weed Killer

If you want a more permanent solution, you can use weed herbicides.

This is a great option if you have persistent weeds that keep coming back no matter how many times you pull them.

There are a variety of effective weed killers available, so make sure to read the labels carefully to find one that will work best for your needs.

6. Mow the Lawn

Mowing the lawn is an essential part of keeping your backyard looking well-maintained and clean.

Not only does it make your yard look more organized and more put together, but it also helps to keep lawn healthy and free of disease and pests.

Depending on the size of your yard, you might want to consider investing in a riding lawn mower.

This will save you time and energy when it comes to mowing the lawn and works great to clear tall grasses.

If you have a smaller yard, a push mower should work just fine.

In the future, be sure to follow a mowing schedule to maintain the proper grass length, and consider lawn-mowing etiquette to keep your neighbors happy.

7. Tackle the Patio

A clean deck or patio is a must-have when trying to make your outdoor space look neat and tidy.

While the exact steps are going to differ according to exactly what you have on your patio, here are the steps we follow at our house:

Remove all furniture and decorations

Removing the furniture will make sure you can get to every nook and cranny of your patio.

Once the furniture is removed it makes the next steps so much easier.

It’s also a good time to check the condition of your outdoor furniture to see if anything is broken or needs to be replaced (ie, those nasty cushions you left out all winter).

Remove the dust

This is a great time to bust out your broom or leaf blower.

Give the patio a once-over to remove any dirt, dust, leaves or debris.

Do some pest control

If you have any pests like ants, spiders or wasps, now is the time to deal with them.

Remove any nests and knock down any visible webs. It’s also a good idea to consider using a pesticide if the problem is severe.

Hose it down

Give your deck or concrete patio a good washing to get it looking its best.

You can use a garden hose with a spray attachment or a pressure washer if you really want the job done right.

This will help you to see any cracks, stains, or broken boards that need to be fixed.

Add Stain or Sealant (optional)

This step isn’t necessary if your deck is in good condition, but it’s something to consider if it’s starting to show its age.

Staining or sealing your deck or patio will help to ensure that it looks great for years to come.

Replace furniture (and add some plants)

Now that your patio is spic and span, it’s time to put everything back together!

Be sure to replace all of your furniture and decorate your patio with some plants to really make it look amazing.

8. Refresh the Landscaping

Ok, you’re almost done, but before you sit back and relax be sure to refresh the landscaping. This step takes minimal effort but makes a huge difference.

Trim Dead Branches

Remove Dead Leaves

Replace Dead Plants

Top Off Beds with Fresh Mulch

Trim Overgrown Hedges

While it can be tempting to skip this step, take the time to do it right and you’ll be rewarded with an amazing backyard that you can be proud of.

9. Add a Storage Solution

Now that you’ve put in all this effort, it’s imperative that you avoid this situation in the future.

If a cluttered, messy backyard is a problem for you, it’s time to add some storage.

Consider purchasing a garden shed, outdoor storage bench, or even just a few plastic bins that you can tuck away when they’re not in use.

Whatever solution you choose, make sure it’s big enough to store all of your outdoor gear including kids’ toys, pet supplies, garden tools, and miscellaneous items.

10. Kick back and Enjoy!

After all this hard work, you’ve finally finished!

Now it’s time to kick back and enjoy your beautiful backyard.

Invite some friends over for a BBQ, play some yard games on the lawn, or just relax on your patio with a cold drink.

You’ve earned it!

Final Thoughts on Cleaning Up Your Backyard

1. Rocks, Minerals, and Gemstones. What’s the Difference?

Rocks, minerals, and gemstones are all naturally occurring materials, but they are not the same thing. In this section, we will introduce you to the basics so that you can learn how to differentiate between them.

What are minerals?

Minerals are the building blocks of rocks, and can be found in all sorts of different places, including soil.

There are more than 5,000 different types of minerals, and they come in all shapes and sizes.

Minerals are made of one or more elements, and each element has its own unique chemical properties. All minerals may be referred to as rocks or stones.

What are rocks?

Rocks are made of different types of minerals, and can be found all over the world.

There are three main types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.

Igneous rocks are made of solidified lava or magma.

Sedimentary rocks are made of pieces of other rocks that have been combined together.

Metamorphic rocks are made of other rocks that have been changed by heat or pressure.

What are gemstones?

Gemstones are minerals that have been identified for their strength and/or beauty.

They are typically cut and polished into different shapes and are often used in jewelry. There are more than 2,000 different types of gemstones, and the value of a gemstone is usually determined by its rarity, color, and size.

2. How to Find Rocks in your Backyard

Now that you have a basic understanding of rocks, minerals, and gemstones, it’s time to learn how to find them in your backyard.

The best way to find rocks is to spend some time outside and explore your surroundings.

The easiest thing to do is to look for rocks that have been exposed to the surface, as these are the easiest to find.

You can also look for rocks in drainage areas, such as creeks and rivers if you happen to have one on your property. Rocks that have been carried away by water are usually round and smooth, which makes them easy to identify.

Another place to look for rocks is in fields and meadows. Rocks that have been broken down by wind and weather are usually found in these areas.

However, finding valuable surface rocks is not very likely. To have the best chance at finding rare or interesting rocks, you’re going to need to dig.

If you’re planning to do any projects that require excavating, trenching, or digging you’ll definitely want to be on the lookout for cool rocks.

You never know what you might find buried beneath the surface of your backyard.

3. Rock Hunting Tools

When you’re looking for rocks underground, it’s important to use the right tools to make the process easier.

Some tools you will want to have on hand will include:

Gloves

Shovel

Pick Axe

Straining Tool (like a colander)

Soil Sieve

Water (in a bucket or from a hose)

Magnifying glass

Paper towels or rags

Magnet

Plastic bags or containers for specimens

A rock identification book or app on your phone

Once you identify an area that you want to explore for rocks, start by digging a small hole about 6-8 inches deep.

When you find something, carefully remove it from the ground and place it in your straining tool to wash the dirt off.

Once you have inspected your find, place it in a plastic bag or container for identification later.

Before you leave the area, is a good idea to strain any soil that you’ve disturbed incase there were any small rocks or gemstones left behind in the dirt that you missed.

3. Types of rocks, gems, and minerals you might find in your backyard

When searching your yard, the opportunities are limitless as to what you might find.

Recently, there was even a report of a man who was digging a well on his property and found a sapphire worth $100 million dollars. How rad would that be!??!?

That being said, there are some types of rocks, gems, and minerals that are more commonly found than others.

As mentioned above, there are three main types of rocks:

Igneous

Igneous rocks are made of solidified lava or magma. They are usually found near volcanoes and can be either extrusive or intrusive.

Some examples of igneous rock include :

– Basalt

– Pumice

– Obsidian

– Granite

Of these, obsidian and granite are the two that many rock hounds get excited to find.

Obsidian is made of solidified lava that was cooled very quickly, which is why it has a glassy appearance. Native Americans used to use it to make arrowheads and spear points.

Granite is another type of igneous rock, but it is much different than obsidian.

Granite is formed by slowly cooled magma, and it is the most common type of rock in the Earth’s crust. It can be found in all 50 states. Currently used in homes for everything from countertops to showers, even small pieces of granite are desirable to many rock collectors.

Sedimentary

Sediments and sedimentary rocks cover about 80% of all continental areas but are less than 1% of the volume of the Earth’s crust.”
–Opengeology.org

As their name eludes to sedimentary rocks are made of sediments that have been cemented together over time.

They are usually found near bodies of water, as the sediments are transported there by rivers or oceans.

Some examples of sedimentary rock include:

– Clay

– Sandstone

– Limestone

– Calcite

-Dolomite

While not valued for their beauty, sedimentary rocks can be full of valuable things.

For example, limestone are often full of fossils.

Metamorphic

Metamorphic rocks are made of other rocks that have been changed by heat or pressure.

They are usually found near mountains and can be either foliated or non-foliated.

Some examples of metamorphic rocks include:

– Slate

– Gneiss

– Marble

– Schist

Minerals

Many people don’t realize that many of the “rocks” that we find to be valuable are actually minerals.

There are more than 4,000 different types of minerals and some can only be found in certain parts of the world.

Some examples of minerals include:

– Quartz

– Pyrite

-Agate

4. What are the most common backyard gems?

Some of the most common gems that can be found in your backyard include a few that have already been mentioned above:

Quartz

Agate

Agate is a type of quartz that comes in many different colors and patterns. It is a very durable mineral and can be found in many different parts of the world. In the US, the state of Oregon is known for its abundance of agate.

Garnet

Garnet is a type of mineral that is made up of different types of iron. It is usually a deep red or black color. You are most likely to find garnet if you live in the eastern US including New York, North Carolina, and Virginia.

Jade

Jade is a very hard, compact mineral that can be carved into many different shapes. It’s green color is caused by the presence of chromium and is found in many parts of the world. Jade is most commonly found in Asia, North America, and South America. In the US, jade can be found in California, North Carolina, and Wyoming.

Turquoise

Typically found in arid climates, turquoise is a blue-green mineral that is prized for its color. It is often used in jewelry and can be found in many different parts of the world. Native Americans in the Southwest use turquoise in their ceremonies and jewelry and it can still be found in parts of New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada.

5. How do I identify backyard rocks?

Now that you know how to find rocks and minerals in your backyard, it’s important that you learn how to identify them.

One of the last things you want to do is overlook a valuable specimen just because you didn’t know what it was.

One of the easiest ways to identify a rock or mineral is by its physical properties.

Some physical properties you can use to identify rocks and minerals include:

– Color

– Luster: The way a mineral reflects light.

– Hardness: How easily a mineral can be scratched or scratch other objects.

– Cleavage: The way a mineral breaks along certain planes.

– Fracture: The way a mineral breaks when it is not along cleavage planes.

– Magnetism

– Specific Gravity: A measure of how much a mineral weighs in comparison to water.

Using these properties, you can identify rocks and minerals by using an identification book or app on your phone.

When using an identification book or app, it’s important to remember that not all rocks and minerals will be listed.

If you’re not sure, you can always take anything you find to a local lapidary who should be able to tell you what it is and whether or not it’s valuable.

A privately owned jewelry store may also be able to help you identify your find as well.

While identifying rocks and minerals can be difficult, it’s a fun and rewarding activity that can help teach you about the earth’s history. With practice, you’ll be able to identify any rock or mineral you come across.

6 How much are my rocks worth?

The value of rocks and minerals can vary greatly depending on the type and size.

While the prospect of finding valuable rocks in your backyard is exciting, it’s important to remember that the majority of rocks found in your yard are not worth very much.

However, if you find a rock or mineral that is not commonly found in your area, it could be worth quite a bit of money.

For example, a small piece of amethyst can be worth around $5, while a large piece of amethyst could be worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

Raw turquoise is currently valued at around $10 per pound, so a small rock could be worth $5-10.

Garnets can range in value from a few dollars per carat to hundreds of dollars per carat, depending on the color and type of garnet.

So, if you find a rock or mineral that you can’t identify, it’s always worth taking it to a local lapidary to get it appraised.

That being said, value is subjective and many rocks and minerals are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them.

Many people look for rocks that are specific shapes or colors, so it’s always worth taking a look around your yard to see what you might find.

A number of people make good money finding and selling rocks that are heart shaped or look like faces.

There is also a market for rocks that are the perfect size and shape for rock skipping.

You can always greatly increase the value of any rock you find by polishing it and adding a nice finish.

So, if you find a cool rock or mineral in your backyard, don’t be discouraged if it’s not worth a lot of money. Instead, enjoy the find and maybe learn something about geology in the process.

To learn more I encourage you to attend local gem and mineral shows where you can see thousands of specimens and get expert advice from people who have been collecting rocks for decades and professionals who buy and sell rocks for a living.

Conclusion

Finding rocks and minerals in your backyard can be a fun and rewarding activity.

Not only can you learn about the different types of rocks and minerals, but you may also find something that is worth quite a bit of money.

While identifying rocks and minerals can be difficult, it’s a skill that can be learned with practice. If you’re not sure what a rock or mineral is, don’t hesitate to take it to a local lapidary for identification.

With a little practice, you’ll be able to identify any rock or mineral you find and maybe even make a little money in the process.

FAQ

Q: How do I polish my rocks?

A: There are many ways to polish rocks, but the most common way is to use a tumbler.

Tumbling is the process of polishing rocks by rolling them around in a barrel with other rocks and sand.

This can be done at home with a small tumbler or you can take your rocks to a professional tumbler.

Q: What should I do if I find a valuable rock?

A: If you find a valuable rock, it’s always best to take it to a local lapidary to have it appraised.

Lapidaries can tell you what type of rock or mineral it is and how much it is worth.

Q: Can I find Geodes in my backyard?

A: Geodes can be found in many areas around the world, but they are not commonly found in most yards.

Highway noise can be a nuisance and affect your quality of life. It can be difficult to enjoy time outside when you’re constantly hearing the sound of cars speeding by. However, there are ways that you can reduce highway noise in your backyard.

By understanding how noise travels, identifying the sources of highway noise, choosing the right plants, or installing barriers you can take steps to create a quiet outdoor space to enjoy.

7 Steps to Reduce Highway Noise in Your Backyard

You may be looking to reduce traffic noise in your yard for a number of reasons.

Maybe you live close to a busy highway and the noise is constantly disrupting your peace and quiet.

Or maybe you’ve recently created a relaxing outdoor space, but the sound of traffic is keeping you from enjoying it.

There are a few common challenges that people have when trying to reduce road noise in their backyard.

One of the main challenges is identifying the sources of highway noise.

It can be difficult to determine where the noise is coming from and how to best block it.

You can spend a lot of money trying to block the traffic noise in your yard, but if you don’t understand how sound works and how to effectively stop it, you might be throwing money out the window.

While many homeowners become so frustrated by the constant, bothersome noise from nearby traffic that they consider moving, before you start looking for a new place to live, it’s important to know there are ways that you can reduce the amount of highway noise in your backyard and finally have some peace, quiet, and enjoy your outdoor space.

1. Understand How Noise Travels

Noise is a type of energy that travels through the air and can be heard when it reaches our ears.

When trying to block road noise in your backyard, it’s important to understand how noise travels. By understanding how noise travels, you can better identify the sources of highway noise in your backyard and take steps to block the noise.

Sound Waves

Sound waves are created when something makes noise. The sound from a car horn, or tire tread against the road for example, create sound waves that travel through the air. These sound waves can be heard by people nearby.

The closer you are to the source of the noise, the louder the noise will be.

This is why highway traffic can be so disruptive if you live close by. The sound waves don’t have far to travel in order to create road noise pollution in your nearby yard.

How Does Sound Travel?

Sounds waves travel through the air in all directions. It’s a ripple effect, just like when you drop a pebble into a pond.

As they travel, the sound waves dissipate, but if you live very close to a highway, freeway or main road the sound waves may still be very strong when they enter your space.

Reflection vs. Absorption

When considering noise reduction strategies you’ve got two options.

Deflection is when you block the sound waves by installing fences or barriers around your property. The sound waves will hit these obstacles and bounce away in the opposite direction.

Absorption is when you use specific soundproofing materials that are typically porous and have sound dampening properties.

To greatly reduce traffic noise, your best bet is to use both strategies together.

2. Identify the Sources of Highway Noise in Your Backyard

When trying to reduce highway noise in your backyard, it’s important to identify the sources of highway noise. By understanding where the noise is coming from, you can better block the noise and create a more peaceful backyard space.

There are a few common ways that people can identify the sources of highway noise in their backyard:

Listen:

The easiest way to identify the sources of highway noise is to listen.

Spend some time outside and listen for the specific sounds that are bothersome. This might include the sound of cars speeding by, busses stopping to pick up passengers, or jake breaks from semi-trucks driving by.

Once you know the specific sounds that are causing the problem, you will know exactly what you’re dealing with.

Use a Sound Meter:

If you have a lot of traffic noise, you may want to consider purchasing a sound meter to get an accurate reading of how loud the noise is. Having this information will help you to know how severe of a noise pollution problem you have and identify the best strategies to block the sounds.

No meter? No problem!

You can enter your address into the U.S. Department of Transportation Road Noise Map and see what the noise level is in decibels where you live.

Determine the Direction:

If you can identify the direction the noise is coming from, you can better block the sound. For example, if the noise is coming from the east, that is where you will want to focus your efforts.

Locate the Nosiest Areas:

Not all areas of your backyard may be impacted by highway noise equally. In fact, you may be surprised to discover areas in your backyard that are much quieter or louder than others.

Identifying these areas can help you to focus your noise-reducing efforts on those specific spots that are the most troublesome.

3. The Power of Plants

You’d never know this backyard is up against a noisy highway thanks to the sound reducing hedge.

Possibly the easiest and most cost effective method to reduce highway noise in your back yard is by using plants to absorb or deflect the sound.

By choosing the right plants, you can create a natural barrier between your home and the highway that will provide sound attenuation.

Since you can head down to your local nursery or home improvement store and purchase mature trees and bushes, this can be an almost instant solution.

There are a few things to consider when choosing plants to deflect highway noise:

–The height of the plant

Plants that are taller will help to deflect more of the sound than shorter plants. Choose plants that are at least six feet tall to create a noise-reducing barrier.

–The width of the plant

The wider the plant, the more sound it will absorb or deflect. Choose plants that have a width of at least three feet for best results. You will want to plant them close together, but be sure to leave space for future growth.

–The density of the leaves

Plants with dense leaves will absorb more sound than plants with sparse leaves. Choose plants that have thick, overlapping leaves for the best noise-reducing results.

Deciduous vs. Evergreen

Deciduous plants lose their leaves in the winter, while evergreen plants keep their leaves year-round.

In order to make sure your efforts to block the sounds work consistently, you’ll want to choose evergreen plants and plant them densely to provide a constant sound barrier.

4. Install a Barrier

Installing a barrier can be an effective way to reduce the amount of noise that is entering your backyard from a busy road.

A properly installed fence or wall will help to absorb or deflect the sound before it has a chance to enter your space.

There are a few things to consider when installing a barrier to block traffic noise:

Types of Barriers

A simple wooden fence can muffle out the sounds from nearby streets.

There are a few different types of barriers that can be used to reduce road noise:

-Fences are easy to install and can be made from a variety of materials, such as wood, metal, or plastic.

-Walls are more expensive to install than fences, but they are typically much taller and can provide better sound reduction.

– A trellis can also be a great way to deflect sounds from nearby roads. By planting vines on a trellis, you can create a natural looking barrier between your home and the highway, that combines the acoustic effects of a fence and plants.

Location of Barrier

When installing a fence or wall, be sure to place it in the location that will provide the best acoustic barrier.

You will also want to consider how the barrier will affect your view and whether it will be an eyesore for your neighbors.

Sound Reducing Ability of the Material

Some materials are better at blocking, deflecting or absorbing sound than others.

When installing a fence or wall, be sure to choose a material that is known for its sound-reducing properties.

Materials with high density, such as concrete or brick, are the best at blocking highway noise, which is why they are used in many noise barriers along highways.

Wood may not be as effective at blocking noise, but it is a more affordable option and can be a great way to add some privacy to your backyard.

Use Soundproofing Materials

If you have a serious noise problem, or if the previous methods aren’t a viable option for you, it may be time to consider soundproofing materials to block the traffic noise in your backyard – or add them to already existing structures like fencing.

Soundproofing materials are designed to absorb or deflect noise before it has a chance to enter your space. By using soundproofing materials, you can significantly reduce the amount of noise that is intruding into your yard.

There are a variety of soundproofing materials available on the market, but the most practical to use in an outdoor space is sound curtains.

Sound Curtains

If you’re looking for an easy or semi-permanent way to reduce road noise in your backyard, sound curtains may be the solution for you.

Acoustic Panels

Acoustic panels are a type of panel that is designed to absorb sound. They are typically made of a porous material, such as foam, that helps to soak up noise before it has a chance to enter your space.

In a backyard, acoustic panels are best used in an enclosed area, like a screened in porch or outdoor living room.

If you’re looking for a more permanent way to block noise in your backyard, acoustic panels may be the solution for you.

Mass Loaded Vinyl

If you’re not interested in installing a permanent barrier, or if you need to reduce the noise from a different direction, mass loaded vinyl (MLV) could be a great choice.

Mass loaded vinyl is a type of soundproofing material that can be installed temporarily or permanently. It is made of a thick, vinyl material that is designed to absorb sound.

Mass loaded vinyl is helpful for people who want to build their own acoustic fences. MLV can be added to the back of fence panels to help reduce the amount of noise that is entering your yard.

Have you ever noticed deer in your yard? There are a few possible reasons why they might be there. Today we’re answering the question, “Why do deer sleep in my yard?” and helping you to decide whether this is a reason to be concerned or excited.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="536" src="https://thebackyardmaster.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Deer-Sleeping-in-Yard-1024x536.jpg" alt="3 Deer sleeping in a yard.
Sleeping Habits of Wild Deer

Maybe you’ve seen them sleeping, or perhaps you’ve noticed the signs after they’ve moved on.

If you’ve got deer bedding down on your property you might wonder why they’ve chosen that particular spot.

There are a few reasons why deer might be sleeping in your yard, which we will cover below.

If you’re okay with deer sleeping in your yard, then enjoy it! It’s a sign that they feel safe and comfortable on your property.

You can even feed your backyard deer to keep them around and attract them to your yard.

However, if you’d prefer they sleep elsewhere there are steps you can take to keep deer out of your yard too.

But before you decide whether they can stay, or need to go it’s important to know why the deer are choosing your yard to sleep in and some basics about deer sleeping habits.

Where Do Deer Sleep?

Deer sleep in a variety of places.

They’ll bed down under the cover of trees, shrubs or brush and sometimes use those same spots for daytime resting as well.

Deer might also den up in tall grass or other vegetation.

They have been known to rest under trees, brush piles, or even around houses to protect themselves from wind or severe weather.

Many experts agree that deer are creatures of habit and will return to the same places over and over again. So if a deer has decided that your backyard is a safe place to rest or eat, you will probably see them frequently.

Do Deer Sleep Standing Up?

Deer can and do sleep standing up.

In fact, they might even move around a bit while they’re sleeping .

It’s not uncommon for a deer to walk to another spot, change their position or even lie down and return to a more upright stance at some point during their sleep cycle.

As prey animals, deer sometimes sleep standing up because they are on high alert for predators that hunt them such as coyotes, bobcats, and foxes.

Because many deer often spend a few minutes dozing followed by a brief alert period, it is common for them to sleep in a variety of positions.

In this photo you can see where the tall grass has been pressed down a telltale sign that deer are sleeping or bedding down in the area.

Bedding Down vs. Sleeping

When we think of a deer being asleep, we often picture them curled up in a ball.

While this is one way they sleep, it’s not very common.

Deer will also bed down, which means they’ll lie down and rest but might still be alert to their surroundings. They may do this alone or with other deer, depending on the time of year.

Common bedding areas are near food sources, water and protective cover.

During mating season, also known as the rutting season, and in fall when they are raising fawns you may find them sleeping while lying down next to each other. They might also stand or sit up during this time too.

If you notice areas of tall grass that appear to be flattened, that is a sign that the deer are using that spot to bed down.

This is why you might see them lying in your yard during the day – they’re just hanging out, not actually sleeping the entire time.

Do Deer Sleep at Night or During the Day?

If you’re wondering if deer are nocturnal, you’re not alone. In fact, it’s a very common question.

While deer may be more active at night during certain times during the year, they are not nocturnal. Instead, deer are considered to be crepuscular, meaning they are most active at dawn and disk.

Like most animals, deer have a natural circadian rhythm which means they adjust their sleeping habits based on season changes throughout the year.

This behavior allows them to be most active during daylight hours when food is more available and they can be more alert for predators at night.

In the winter months, deer will generally sleep for longer periods of time and shorter periods during daylight hours.

This allows them to conserve energy in colder weather when food is more scarce.

So, the general answer to “When do deer sleep?” is a little bit during the day and a little at night.

Do Deer Sleep or Just Rest?

As an animal with many natural predators, deer do not have the luxury of sleeping for long periods of time.

A typical deer sleep cycle consists of less than 10 minutes of actual sleep followed by alert attention. This means they are never spending a lot of time sleeping, nor do they enter deep sleep.

During this time a deer may be watching for predators but not actively running from them so that they can conserve energy.

Deer can sleep with their eyes open or closed and are able to hear everything going on around them.

In a group setting, deer will often sleep with one eye open while the others rest so they can stay aware of their surroundings at all times but still save energy by being in a resting state.

Sleeping deer are hard to observe because their sleep cycle makes it very difficult to determine if they are asleep.

But whether they are just resting or sleeping, it is still interesting to know why they are choosing to do so on your property.

Why Are Deer Sleeping in my Yard?

If you have a park-like yard that provides food, shelter, and safety from predators that’s the perfect place for deer to sleep.

Deer are beautiful and intelligent animals that are capable of seeking out the perfect resting spot and it’s quite possible that this may be on your property.

Here is what they are looking for:

Reason #1: Security

The first reason why deer might be spending time in your backyard or garden area could be because they feel very safe there.

Deer are likely to bed down in a property that has tall vegetation, which provides them with cover from predators like coyotes, mountain lions or even dogs.

If your yard has a lot of trees, shrubs and other vegetation, it’s likely that the deer feel safe and protected there.

This is especially true of a mother doe that has a fawn.

The doe will keep her newborn close to the ground for its first few weeks of life and in areas where she feels protected from predators that could harm her young one.

You can encourage deer to stay in your yard by keeping this natural vegetation intact.

Reason #2: Comfort

Another reason why deer might be sleeping in your yard is that they are very comfortable.

Depending on the time of year the weather in your area may be extreme.

While deer are able to live in almost any climate, they like to be comfortable too.

Where we live, it can get up to 120 degrees during the summer and during the hottest part of the day, deer can be seen laying down in shady lawns throughout our neighborhood.

Likewise, if your region is covered in snow during the winter, deer will seek out warmer areas to sleep during cold nights.

Reason #3: Food Sources

The next reason why deer might be sleeping in a certain area is that there are food sources nearby.

Deer thrive on eating grasses, shrubs and other plants but they also need to eat high protein foods like acorns which provide them with extra nutrients and energy.

If you’ve got ornamental plants or fruit trees that deer like to eat or a water source that’s a likely explanation for why they are choosing sleep in your yard until their next meal. I

And of course, if you are feeding them they will definitely stick around.

Are Deer Bad to Have in Your Backyard?

Generally speaking, having a deer in your backyard is not a bad thing.

In fact, there are many people will do whatever they can to attract deer to their backyards.

That being said, deer will absolutely eat anything from your yard or garden that they have access to.

They are also a common host of deer ticks that are known to carry Lyme disease.

Plus, wherever there are deer, there will also be a lot of deer poop.

For these reasons, if you have pets or children in your backyard, it’s best to try to deter the deer from sticking around.

A few common deer deterrent ideas include installing motion-activated sprinklers, keeping your dog in your backyard, or removing the sources of food and water they are seeking.

Final Thoughts

Deer are likely to sleep in areas that have tall vegetation, or dense foliage which provides them with cover from predators like coyotes, mountain lions, or even dogs.

Since many backyards provide a safe area with food, shelter and protection from predators, they make good places for deer to sleep.

While you may see deer sitting or laying down in your yard, they actually don’t get much sleep. Every couple of hours they only spend a few minutes dozing so they can stay alert to protect themselves from potential dangers.

If you enjoy watching wildlife, it’s fun to have deer in your backyard.

But, if you are concerned about them damaging your plants or leaving droppings all over, there are ways to deter them from staying around and encourage them to sleep elsewhere.

Moles are a common problem for many homeowners. They can cause damage to your lawn and garden, and they’re incredibly annoying! You want them gone as soon as possible, but you’re wondering how to get rid of moles in your backyard. We know what works and what doesn’t work when it comes to getting rid of moles so that you can enjoy your backyard again without worrying about those little guys ruining everything.

How to Get Rid of Moles in Your Yard

Dealing with moles in your yard can be an ongoing battle.

I know because I’ve dealt with them in my own yard.

They can destroy plants, burrow into your lawn, and even cause structural damage to the foundation of your home.

If left to their own devices, moles can be a real nuisance as they dig their tunnels forming little volcanoes of soil throughout your beautiful lawn.

While there are some people who like moles and will even try to attract them as a natural form of pest control, most homeowners want to get rid of moles as soon as possible.

While moles do not pose any threat to humans or other animals that live in your yard, they can be a real nuisance if you have plants or an established lawn that you want to keep healthy and free of mole hills.

The good news is that there are many effective and safe ways you can get rid of moles in your yard for good.

What are moles?

Moles are small mammals that live mostly on the ground, but can also travel through tunnels.

They have a cylindrical body with short legs and long claws made for digging.

Moles spend most of their time looking for food underground or in your lawn (lucky you!) and can cause a lot of damage when they are digging.

They are closely related to voles and shrews, and while many people consider these creatures to be rodents, they are not.

Moles live in North America, Europe, Asia and some parts of Africa.

Moles are most active at night, when they get to work and burrow through your yard looking for food.

They eat mostly insects, earthworms, grubs and other invertebrates like rolly-pollies and insects that they find underground.

Moles are often confused with gophers, which are a different type of animal that also can cause damage to your lawn.

Gophers have larger heads and shorter tails than moles. One way to know if you are dealing with a mole vs a gopher is to look for the mole’s tunnels. Gopher tunnels are typically much deeper, while mole tunnels are closer to the surface and may be visible.

Signs You Have Moles in Your Backyard

It’s not hard to determine whether or not you have a mole problem.

Mole activity can cause damage to your lawn and garden, which is one of the most obvious signs that you have them in your backyard.

Most likely, you’re reading this because you have noticed large molehills or those telltale dirt piles around their tunnels.

Moles leave a trail of soil behind as they tunnel, so you may also see this “dirt” on your lawn or in flower beds.

Moles are active mostly at night, so if you see something moving around in your yard when it is dark out, there is a good chance that it is a mole.

They are also pretty noisy while they tunnel through your lawn at night. While you may not be able to hear them, your dog probably can. If you notice your dog barking or scratching at the ground a lot at night, there is a good chance that he is trying to tell you there are moles in your backyard.

If you see any of these signs, you probably have moles in your backyard.

Mole control can be difficult, but if you know what works and what doesn’t work when it comes to getting rid of moles then it will help reduce the damage they cause and get rid of them quickly.

What Attracts Moles to your Yard?

There are many things that can make your lawn attractive to moles.

Moles are attracted to yards that have a lot of loose soil. If you have rich, dark soil that is easy to dig through, you are more likely to have moles in your yard.

They are also attracted to yards with a lot of moisture. If you have a lawn that is constantly wet or has a lot of standing water, moles will be more likely to take up residence there.

If you have a lot of trees or shrubs in your yard, moles may be attracted to those areas because they provide good cover for them from predators and their root systems also offer lots of food opportunities.

Another factor to consider is that moles love to eat earthworms and grubs. Their diet consists of mostly insects, so if you have rich soil in your lawn or garden area full of bugs, the moles are going to want to eat them.

If you want to get rid of moles in your backyard, it is important to understand what attracts them there in the first place. Once you know what is attracting them, you can take steps to reduce or eliminate that attraction

Addressing these attractants can help reduce the number of moles in your yard and make future mole control easier.

Please know there are a lot of products on the market that claim to help get rid of moles, but not all of them work.

In this article we will share with you some tips and products that have been proven to be effective when it comes to getting rid of moles.

There are many ways to get rid of backyard moles, but not all of them work.

In this section we will share with you some tips and products that have been proven to be effective when it comes to getting rid of moles.

Mole Traps (If you really want to get rid of them fast)

Ok, I’m going to cut right to the chase.

You’re reading this post because you want to get rid of moles in your backyard, and one of the only tried and true ways to do so quickly, is by using a trap.

Other methods will work, but they will take much longer.

You can buy mole traps at your local hardware store or online.

Depending on your end goal you can find live traps and humane kill traps.

If you plan to try to catch and release a mole you must consider where you can do so. You will want to be sure to find an area where the mole can continue to live happily ever after without ruining anyone else’s lawn.

That being said, most homeowners opt for a kill trap.

No matter what type of trap you decide to use, placement is key. You want to place the trap in the tunnel that the mole is using.

If you are not sure where the tunnels are, start by finding a mole hill and then use a garden trowel or metal rod to poke around in the ground until you find an active tunnel.

There will be a tunnel on either side of the mole hill and it’s best to put a trap in each tunnel as you do not know where they will be coming from.

To determine precise placement you will need to follow the directions provided by the manufacturer of the trap you decide to use.

Once you have the trap in place, patience is key. Since the moles are active at night, so you will need to check your traps each morning to see if you have caught one.

If you are using a live trap, be sure to release the mole as soon as possible.

Mole Repellent Granules and Spray

Another option is an all-natural mole repellant that can be used in your yard.

There are both granules and sprays available, and they work by creating a scent that moles do not like.

You can find these products at most hardware stores or online.

While mole repellent is not always 100% effective, it can help reduce the number of moles in your yard.

Repellants can also be combined with other mole control methods to make them more effective.

Castor Oil

Moles do not like the smell of castor oil, so if you want to use a natural method this is one that has been proven to work against moles.

To get rid of backyard moles using castor oil:

Find the mole entrances to your yard and pour castor oil on them.

You can also make your own DIY mole repellant by mixing 3 tablespoons of castor oil with 1 tablespoon of dish soap. Add the mixture to to a gallon of water and douse the entrances to their tunnels and anywhere else you see signs of their presence.

You can also purchase ready to use castor oil based repellents as mentioned above.

Make sure to avoid getting the oil on any plants or flowers, as it will kill them.

Castor oil is a non-toxic way to get rid of backyard moles, but it may take some time for it to be effective.

You will need to reapply the castor oil every few days until the moles are gone.

Use Plants to Deter Moles

Another way to get rid of backyard moles is by planting flowers and herbs they don’t like.

Plants like lavender, rosemary, thyme, and marigolds have a strong scent that moles do not like.

You can plant these around the edges of your yard or in areas where you are seeing evidence of mole activity.

While using plants to deter moles is not always 100% effective, it can help reduce their numbers.

Chemical Poisons

Personally, I think that the poisons are cruel, so I don’t recommend them.

These poisons work by suffocating the mole after they eat it and ingest it through their saliva glands.

There is also another type of poison called zinc phosphide. This one works because the mole will be attracted to the bait and then ingest it.

This poison works by causing seizures in the mole that eventually leads to death.

The last type of chemical poisoning is called strychnine, which has been illegal for use since 2012 because of its toxicity level. This one causes nervous system failure after a few days of eating the poisoned food source.

Now you can see why we don’t suggest these methods.

Mole Removal Methods That Don’t Work

If you take a quick look online, you will see many suggestions for removing moles that are simply a waste of your time. Here are a few of the most commonly recommended mole removal tactics that don’t really work.

Flooding

Shoving the end of your hose into a tunnel and filling it with water will not work. The moles will simply dig another tunnel and the problem will persist.

Home Remedies

There are a number of home remedies that people have tried over the years to get rid of moles in their yard, but none of them have been proven to be effective.

These include:

– cayenne pepper

– garlic

-coffee grounds

– vinegar

– ammonia

These remedies either don’t work or they are so unpleasant that homeowners will not continue with the treatment.

Ultrasonic Repellents

Ultrasonic repellents are devices that emit sound waves that are supposed to scare the moles away.

However, there is no scientific evidence to support the claim that these devices work.

In fact, one study found that ultrasonic repellents actually made the mole problem worse.

Ridding Your Yard of Insects

When researching mole removal you will find many people suggesting that you should kill off the insects in your lawn to remove the mole’s food supply.

While this could actually work, why would you want to do that?

The insects in your lawn serve a variety of purposes, including keeping your lawn healthy via aeration, nutrients and pest control.

You should never kill off all of your insects – they are very important to the ecosystem!

How to Keep Moles from Coming Back

Once you have gotten rid of the moles in your yard, it is important to take some steps to keep them from coming back.

Wire Mesh

Installing wire mesh is a good way to keep moles from digging tunnels into your yard.

While not an easy process, it works really well by preventing the moles from tunneling into your yard.

To install the wire mesh you will need to dig a trench around the perimeter of your yard and place the wire mesh in it.

The mesh should go down at least a foot below the surface of the ground to block the moles from entering.

The wire mesh should also be buried in the soil so that it is flush with the ground to prevent injuries, tripping and to avoid breaking your lawnmower.

Fencing

While moles typically enter your yard through underground tunnels they do sometimes come to the surface.

If you’ve ever wondered, “Can you eat squirrel from your backyard?” this post will tell you everything you need to know. Today we’re covering everything you need to know about eating squirrels, from how to catch them to how to cook ’em!

Can You Eat Squirrels From Your Backyard?

One of the most frequently asked questions we get from people is “do people eat squirrel?”

The answer to that question, as surprising as it may sound, is yes. However, there are caveats.

Before you go pretending that you’re on a season of Alone trying to win a million dollars by trapping and eating your neighborhood squirrel there are a few things you should know.

Humans have consumed squirrel as food for a very long time.

You can eat squirrels from your backyard, provided you have a hunting license.

Most states consider the red and grey squirrels game animals.

If you live in California, you will also need a permit to trap the squirrels.

Hunting and eating squirrels from your yard can be an excellent way to provide food for yourself and your family.

Squirrels are plentiful, especially in suburban and rural settings where people tend to feed backyard squirrel for fun.

Even though you can eat squirrels from your backyard, there are things you need to consider before doing so:

Is it legal to hunt squirrels in your backyard?

Is squirrel meat safe to eat?

When is the best time of year to hunt squirrels?

Once you catch them, how do you cook them?

There may be legalities and consequences of hunting and eating squirrel meat that you were unaware of. Let’s look closer at these questions.

It is important to check with your state fish and game department and city regulations before hunting and eating squirrels from your backyard. Laws may differ in urban and rural areas as well.

It is legal to hunt squirrels in most states. However, you will need to check with your local agencies and see which specific methods of hunting and trapping are allowed.

And remember, just because it’s legal to hunt squirrels in your state, doesn’t mean it’s legal in residential areas.

In fact, there are a few states that the harvesting of squirrels is illegal.

Random Fact: Olney, Illinois, is strictly against hunting squirrels. Accidentally running over a squirrel will cost you as much as $750, and if you are caught hunting or eating squirrel you can face criminal charges!

How Do You Hunt Squirrel in Your Backyard?

Hunting squirrels in your backyard can be as easy or difficult as you want to make it. You can use a variety of traps and hunting methods.

For obvious reasons, guns are not the best option.

A pistol would destroy the meat of the animal and a BB gun is unlikely to kill a squirrel.

Also, using a firearm in your backyard can have some serious legal implications. In fact, you could face charges, even on your own property!

A bow and arrow can be a good option, but you would need to be very accurate and have a high level of skill.

Remember, this is not the Hunger Games. A bow will require you to get close enough for your prey to see you. This can result in scaring off squirrels before they even come into range! Plus, it may be illegal to use a bow in your backyard depending on where you live.

The best option by far, if legal where you reside, is to use a trap.

There are two types of traps you can use for squirrels, live cage traps and kill traps.

Live Cage Traps:

Live cage trap allow the animal to enter but not leave. This is a humane way to catch your prey as they will be unharmed when released from the enclosure. You have no doubt seen one of these traps before; they are the kind that look like a wire mesh box with an opening at either end.

They can be purchased online and in hunting supply stores. Be sure to check all local regulations as well as federal laws for this method, it may require registration or licensing depending on where you live and what squirrels you are hunting.

Kills Traps:

These traps are designed to kill the squirrels so you can simply dump their bodies out of the trap once they have been killed or stunned by an action like a powerful blow to the head with a club.

Sometimes this is called “Clubbing” your prey, and it can be an effective way for you to get your squirrels.

Be aware, though, that this method can result in some pretty nasty clean up and you may not even be able to eat the meat off of a dead animal that has been hit with force like that!

You can also try setting up snares in your backyard for trapping squirrels. Snares are not legal in all states but can be a quick way to catch an animal when you have no time, don’t want to get messy with traps, or simply need to remove the prey from your yard quickly before children and pets find it!

The most important thing is that the animal is humanely trapped and killed, so there’s no suffering involved.

What Types of Squirrels can you Eat?

You can eat all types of squirrels, but your choice will probably depend on where you live and which squirrels are native to the area.

For example, those living in Florida may wish to stick with eating cat and fox squirrel because their meat usually has a mild flavor that is pretty similar to chicken or rabbit!

If you live in the Midwest or Northeast, however, it’s best to stick with eating gray squirrels because they are large and easy to trap.

Ground Squirrels, which are the most common type in California, can also be eaten but may have a strong smell and taste.

If you do decide to eat ground squirrels they should be skinned first so that their scent is not transferred onto your hand while you handle them! In addition, they should always be cooked until well done with no pink left at all.

Red Squirrels, which are common in the Northeast, are smaller and usually not as easy to catch.

Eastern Gray Squirrels – These large squirrels can be found in the Northeast and Midwest of America. They are easy to catch because they usually don’t run away fast, which makes them a popular choice for novice hunters!

Flying squirrels can also be eaten, but they are pretty small so you might have to eat a few of them at once. They also tend to be tougher than the other types.

One thing to keep in mind is that each species has slightly different nutritional information and cooking methods. For example fox squirrels contain more protein than gray ones but also tend to be a bit smaller.

How to Cook Backyard Squirrel

Once you have caught your squirrels, assuming they are dead from a trap or clubbing, it is time to clean and prepare them for cooking.

Be sure that the animals were killed humanely using one of the methods described above before doing this next step!

The first thing you will want to do is skin it.

There should be little red bumps on exposed flesh; this is where hair follicles attach themselves to lay down new hair growth . Simply rub your fingers over the bumps and they will come right off.

Be sure to scrub them thoroughly with warm water before proceeding! Next, you can gut it or not; this is totally up to personal preference. If you choose not to gut your squirrels then simply cut off of their feet at the ankle joint .

After your squirrel is gutted and cleaned, it can be cooked in a variety of ways. You want to be sure to follow safe cooking practices to avoid any chance of contamination.

– Cook all meats to proper temperature (165°F)

– Minimize cross-contamination by using different utensils and cutting boards for meat than you use for vegetables or other foods. You don’t want raw squirrel juice in your salad!

If the meat is not cooked properly, it can be very dangerous and result in a serious case of food poisoning.

A few popular methods of cooking squirrel include:

– Roasting:

Wrap the meat completely with foil and roast on 375 degrees for about 45 minutes to an hour -or- until they are tender when pierced with a fork or knife.

– Boiling:

Bring a pot of water to a boil and add squirrel pieces. You can also add seasonings like salt and pepper at this point if you’d like. Allow the meat to cook for about an hour until they are tender when pierced with a fork or knife.

-Grilling:

If you’d rather grill them than roast or boil them, simply place your squirrel pieces on a hot grill and cook for about five minutes on each side. Be aware that the meat can be very tough so it will need to be cut into smaller chunks before cooking if this is an option for you. It’s not recommended that you try to eat the meat off of a squirrel leg, for example.

– Smoking:

This can be done in an outdoor smoker or on your grill; it’s up to you! Simply place the meat inside and smoke until tender at about 180°F. It should take about four hours total if smoking them with wood chips like hickory, oak or apple wood.

-Slow Cooking:

Since squirrel is lean meat, it does well in the crockpot which will result in a more tender meal.

It’s important to note that since squirrels are a dark meat without much fat, they can easily dry out if overcooked!

If you overcook squirrels during any of these cooking methods you can end up with some pretty tough meat that is not very enjoyable to eat.

What Does Squirrel Taste Like?

Many people say that squirrel tastes like poultry; it is a white meat that can be quite good if prepared correctly.

The diet of the animal you’re eating will affect its flavor and texture, so keep this in mind as well. If your squirrels have been eating nuts then their flesh may taste nutty or even slightly sweet!

If they’ve been feeding on berries and fruits their meat can become quite gamey.

If you are not used to eating game meat, this is something that might take a little getting used to.

Luckily, there are a few different ways you can help to reduce the gamey taste of your cooked squirrel.

First, try soaking the meat in buttermilk for about an hour before cooking it. This is because acetic acid found in buttermilk helps remove some of the odor from meat and fish. So this step will also help to remove some of that strong smell.

Secondly, you can soak the meat in a brine solution made from saltwater and other seasonings for about 30 minutes before cooking it.

The best way though is just to get used to eating gamey meats like deer or squirrel! Humans ate this way for thousands of years before refrigerators and grocery stores, once you get used to it, you’ll probably like it.

Besides the flavor aspect though, there really isn’t that much difference in terms of health benefits between squirrel meat and other types of meats like rabbit, poultry, or beef.

What Are Some Good Squirrel Recipes?

While you may not be familiar with different methods of preparing squirrel, there are a number of recipes around the web that can help you get started.

Some of these recipes include:

Brunswick Squirrel Stew

This vegetable stew is usually made with tomatoes and features veggies like lima beans, corn, and okra. Potatoes are sometimes included in these recipes; others serve it over potatoes, while others leave them out entirely.

Country Fried Squirrel

This southern traditional meal is perfect if you’re a little squeamish about eating squirrel for the first time. Many people are willing to eat fried squirrel since it’s so similar to chicken fried steak. The squirrel meat is first dipped in seasoned flour mixture and then buttermilk-and-egg washed before being double breaded. The crust of this squirrel is kept crisp and flavorful by deep frying it. Young squirrels will result in a more delicate finished product, as will older squirrels that have more chew to them. It’s delicious served with green beans and mashed potatoes.

Cajun Squirrel

This recipe features squirrel cooked in a Cajun frying batter with spices like thyme, oregano, basil, garlic powder and cayenne pepper. You can eat it on its own or pair it with rice or potatoes!

You can also substitute squirrel in almost any recipe that calls for dark meat like duck, rabbit or other game meats like venison or wild boar.

Is Squirrel Good for You?

Squirrel is very nutritious and it’s also an excellent source of protein!

One ounce (or about 28 grams) of cooked, lean ground squirrel contains around 100 calories, with only seven percent coming from fat.

Its main energy sources are protein and fat, with about 33 grams of protein per one-ounce serving.

As for the amount of vitamins squirrel contains, it is rich in niacin (vitamin B-complex) which can help improve your metabolism as well as thiamine (Vitamins B-complex again).

It also has a good supply of vitamin A, folate, riboflavin, vitamin B-12 and minerals like magnesium, phosphorus and zinc.

All in all then squirrel is a very nutritious meat that many people enjoy.

When Can You Hunt and Eat Squirrel?

The best time to hunt squirrels is during the autumn months. It is often the only legal time to hunt squirrels as well.

Hunting during this time can be a great way to stock up on food for the coming months.

Squirrels are most active during the early morning hours, especially in late summer and fall when they’re foraging for food.

You can also try hunting squirrel at dusk or dawn because this is when they are moving around their nests.

As with any game meat, you will need to age it properly before cooking and eating. This means hanging the animal in an airtight bag or container kept at temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit for no less than two weeks after it is killed.

How Many Squirrels Can You Bag a Day?

In many states, you are allowed to collect up to six squirrels in a single day.

Squirrel season typically begins around the first part of September and can last through January.

Even though the hunting season is long, it may become more difficult to bag the daily quota as cold weather sets in.

Still, being allowed to kill 6 squirrels a day will provide you with plenty of fresh squirrel meat to last you a while.

Is Squirrel Meat Safe to Eat?

Squirrel meat is typically safe to eat.

This is because squirrels are not at the top of the food chain. They typically do not eat garbage or other animals that could be diseased.

Still, you should always cook your meat fully before eating to kill any potential bacteria that may cause harm to humans if ingested raw.

Squirrels are rodents and as such are susceptible to:

Diseases that affect rodents.

Parasites such as ticks and fleas that can carry disease

Poisons such as pesticides and herbicides

If you read “diseases” and immediately thought of rabies, the CDC states that small rodents such as squirrels are almost never infected with the disease. There are other diseases that squirrels might carry that can be passed to humans.

Do Squirrels Carry Diseases?

Squirrels can carry diseases that can be passed to humans.

For example, squirrels are the number one culprit blamed in the recent bubonic plague outbreak in California. These zoologic diseases can cause illness and sometimes death.

Another disease that can be caused by eating squirrel is Creutzfeldt- Jakob Disease or CJD. This is also known as Mad Cow Disease. It is only known to affect people who have eaten infected squirrel brains. The prognosis of CJD has often ended in the death of the patient within a year.

To avoid serious illness or death be sure to avoid:

Eating squirrel brains

Coming in contact with spinal fluid

Consuming large amounts of squirrel meat over a long period of time

If you hunt and kill a squirrel be sure to wear gloves while handling the animal. Be certain it is properly cooked before eating, and make sure that none of its meat goes to waste by roasting or frying up all pieces for your family’s dinner!

What Parasites Do Squirrels Carry?

Squirrels are also susceptible to disease-carrying parasites such as ticks which can carry Lyme disease and fleas that can carry bubonic plague. Taking care not to be bitten by these insects is important to your health.

Can Backyard Squirrels Be Poisoned?

Another issue with consuming squirrel meat is that of poisoning.

Whether the poisonings are purposeful or accidental, it is much more likely a squirrel will be contaminated in an urban area.

Sometimes people will put poison out to kill the squirrels. Other times the squirrels may get into poison intended for other rodents such as mice.

The squirrel might also consume natural foods in an urban area that have been sprayed with pesticides or herbicides. These ingested toxins may affect the quality of the squirrel meat.

Can You Eat Squirrel From Your Backyard

While commonly considered to be nuisance animals, squirrels can actually serve as a delicious meal.

As long as you follow all the local laws regarding squirrel hunting and trapping squirrel you should be able to eat squirrel from your backyard.

Squirrel meat can provide several essential vitamins and minerals, such as Vitamin B12, Niacin, Zinc, and Selenium.

While it is important to properly cook your meat in order to kill any bacteria that may be present in the squirrel, many people believe that eating slow-cooked or grilled wild game, in general, provides a healthier alternative than commercially processed meats such as ground beef.

If you’ve been wanting to live a more self-sufficient lifestyle, harvesting backyard squirrel may be a good place to start.

Deer are beautiful creatures that can be a lot of fun to watch. However, they can also be quite elusive and are easily scared away. If you’re hoping to do some backyard deer watching, today we will teach you how to attract deer to your yard.

Attracting Deer into Your Yard

There are many reasons why homeowners want to attract deer.

Some people like how they look, while others are interested in watching how the animals interact with each other.

For folks who live in rural areas, their yards may be multiple acres that are suitable for hunting and providing food for their families.

However, deer can be quite skittish when it comes to entering areas inhabited by people. They definitely aren’t going to come to your yard if they’re worried about how safe it is.

That’s why deer need all the help that they can get when it comes to feeling more comfortable to overcome their fear of humans.

Typically, this will mean that their drive for whatever they want in your yard needs to be stronger than their instinct to stay away from people.

How Do I Get Deer to Come on my Property?

Any gardener will tell you that it’s pretty easy to attract deer.

All you have to do is provide them with something to eat and you won’t be able to keep them away. LOL!

Where we live in rural northern California, backyard deer are a daily occurrence.

This is because our yard is full of food sources, water, and native plants that the deer need to survive.

It’s wonderful to wake up in the morning and see bucks, does, and baby deer grazing on our property.

If you’d like to be able to do the same, try some of these tips and tricks.

Caution: While deer are beautiful to look at and fun to watch, it’s important to consider to dangers of having deer in your yard:

Deer are a popular host for ticks with can transmit Lyme’s Disease to your family and pets.

Once present, deer will eat anything they have access to and can cause serious damage to your landscape and lawn.

While not common, it is possible for deer to attack humans. Never approach a deer or attempt to feed them by hand.

Where there are deer, there is deer poop, which can be unsightly and spread disease to pets and other animals.

There is a lot of bad information out there regarding what is safe to feed backyard deer. Be sure to do your research and make sure you don’t feed them something that will make them sick or kill them by accident.

1. Create a Backyard Deer Habitat

Deer prefer to spend most of their time in areas where they have protection and a clear view of their surroundings.

Commonly called transition areas, deer love to spend time grazing in open spaces that are close to the security provided by nearby trees and shrubs. It’s important to keep this in mind if you want to create a deer-friendly habitat.

You’ll want to provide large, open areas for grazing which are surrounded or lined by trees or dense bushes. Be sure to plant plenty of tall grass for security cover. Remember that deer are wild animals and they like to keep a safe distance from people and predators.

2. Plant Clover

Deer are herbivores that love to eat clover.

Providing an area full of clover is almost guaranteed to keep deer coming around. That being said, they prefer the soft shoots provided by new growth, so it’s important to keep the area mowed.

Whitetail deer absolutely love clover and since it’s full of nutrients, easily digestible, and super easy to grow it makes a great way to keep deer coming into your yard.

3. Install Deer Feeders

If you are interested in attracting deer to your property, one of the best ways is by providing an easy source of food.

A great way to do this is by installing a deer feeder where they can come and eat whenever they want.

One of the benefits of using a deer feeder is that they provide a source of clean, healthy food because you are in control of the quality of deer feed you place into the feeder.

Feeders can also be a great source of supplemental feeding during the winter season when a lot of food is covered in snow.

4. Keep Pets Inside

It’s important to keep your pets inside when you are trying to attract deer.

They may be cute and cuddly, but the last thing you want is for a fawn or young deer to get hurt by one of your dogs or cats. Besides, deer are smart and have a great sense of hearing, and won’t come around if they hear barking or see other animals.

If you have pets, it’s a good idea to keep them in an area of the house where they won’t disturb deer while they are grazing.

5. Plant Food Plots

Another great way to attract deer is to provide them with a food source that they love.

Food plots are an extremely effective and easy option for homeowners who want to do their part in providing natural nourishment for wildlife.

Common crops to include in a backyard food plot for deer include clover, alfalfa, chicory, and other plants that are in the sunflower family.

To create your own food plot, simply plant the seeds in an area that is weed-free and well-tilled.

6. Plant Fruit Trees

Another way to create a tempting food source is by planting fruit trees.

Deer love sweet fruits, so this can be an excellent option for homeowners who want to start feeding deer without spending too much money or time on the project.

That being said, if you plant fruit trees the deer will eat the fruit and there will be none left for you. Apple trees, apricot trees, and plum trees are popular treats for hungry deer.

7. Offer Salt and Mineral Blocks

Deer have a strong sense of smell that lets them find their favorite salt and mineral blocks from great distances.

This gives you an easy way to attract deer to your property because all you have to do is place these blocks in an area that is easy for them to access.

Apple salt blocks are a popular choice because they have a sweet smell that draw the deer in, and plenty of protein and fat.

However, you must be aware that the minerals from a salt lick will soak into your lawn when it rains and deer will be attracted to this area for a long time.

You will need to check with your local fish and game to see if salt licks are allowed in your area. Some jurisdictions consider salt blocks to be a lure and illegal to place in public spaces.

8. Avoid Chemical Lawn Treatments

One of the best ways to attract deer is by providing them with a natural habitat where they feel safe.

This includes how you treat your lawn so it’s important not to use chemical treatments that will kill all vegetation, which makes the area less inviting for deer.

If your goal is to invite deer into your yard to eat, then you want to make sure what they are eating will not harm or poison them.

One of the best ways to attract deer without harming them is by using organic lawn fertilizers.

You can find a wide range of great products that are safe for people and pets, but also provide much-needed nutrients for your grass so it will be more inviting to animals who want to come over and graze.

9. Plant Wildflowers

Planting wildflowers is a great way to draw deer into your yard.

Many flower species are eaten by deer including tulips, pansies, and hostas. When you plant flowers that deer love, they will be inclined to visit your yard more often than if it were full of plants they don’t enjoy. You can also take this one step further by adding some rose bushes which are another favorite flower for many species of deer.

10. Provide a Water Source

Deer are attracted to any source of water, which includes birdbaths and small ponds.

If you want to attract deer and make your yard a much more inviting place, then it’s important that the animals have access to water at all times. All you need is enough fresh water for them so they can drink whenever they feel thirsty.

If you live in an area that gets hot and dry in the summer, then adding water features to your property is a sure way to entice deer to enter your yard.

11. Plant Tall Grasses

Tall grasses like deer grass, fountain grass, and maiden grass are another excellent way to attract deer.

These tall plants provide good cover for the animals while they graze on shorter foliage that is easier for them to get at when you place it close to your home.

You can also plant these in containers and place them around the yard to create more areas where deer will feel safe.

12. Provide Bedding Cover

Deer herds tend to congregate in areas where there is plenty of brush or bedding cover. If you want to attract deer into your yard, then it’s important that you provide them with some kind of place where they can hide and feel safe at all times, especially when sleeping.

While the tall grasses are a great option, consider planting shrubs like cedar trees or arborvitae which will not only give them more bedding cover but will look gorgeous as well.

You can also create a protected area for them by collecting fallen branches and piling them up together to make a natural shelter.

13. Plant Oak Trees

I was surprised to learn that deer eat oak trees and that acorns are a primary food source. I should have known since our property is covered with oak trees and deer are in our yard daily.

Oak twigs and leaves are a favorite food for deer and they will eat the bark in winter when other foods are scarce. If you want to attract deer into your yard, then planting oak trees is a great way to do it.

14. Use a Deer Decoy

Deer are always wary of predators, so it’s important to make them feel as safe as possible.

One way to do this is by installing a deer decoy that makes the area seem more natural for wildlife.

However, it’s important that you use a decoy that is appropriate for your area. For instance, you may want to do some research to confirm the most common species of deer in your area.

15. Use Deer Lures

The jury is still out on this one, but it won’t hurt to try.

If you want to attract deer to your yard, then it’s important that you use good-quality deer lures. These come in many different forms including scents, feed pellets, or even hanging bags. Hunters use deer lures to attract or lure deer to them so they can shoot the animals, but homeowners are using these same products in a positive way for their yards.

Deer Urine is a common ingredient in lures that are supposed to attract deer. It’s also possible that their curiosity about any new smell, including the lures will appeal to them as well, and they may be more inclined to come onto your property.

Again, you will need to check with authorities in your area to see what the local laws say about the use of deer lures and deer urine.

Attracting Deer to Your Yard

Deer are curious creatures who enjoy exploring new environments and eating many different types of food. By using these tips for how to attract deer into your yard, you can create your own inviting place where they will feel safe and enjoy spending their time.

Simply put, deer are attracted to food, certain smells, and reproductive cycles.

Deer are primarily lured by food, especially new plant growth which they are very eager to eat. They are also drawn to certain smells that can come from either potential mates or predators. Depending on the proximity of human homes, deer might also be drawn closer for respite from harsh weather conditions. And finally, if a female deer is in her mating cycle she will be more likely to venture out into areas where males tend to congregate. Basically, there’s an overlap of these different attractants at many times throughout the year – but food is always what brings them back time after time!

Should I use peanut butter to attract deer?

No, do not use peanut butter to attract deer.
This is actually a very common question. The problem with using peanut butter as bait is that it’s dangerous; deer could consume too much and harm their health or even die of overconsumption of the peanut products. Other foods are equally as appealing to deer so it’s best not to use peanut butter to attract them.

How can I attract deer to my yard in the winter?

You may find that it is easier to get deer to come into your yard in the cold winter months than at other times of the year. That is because they are searching for food to help them survive. Deer will eat almost anything, including pine cones and evergreen branches; they may also be drawn in by the salt you’ve put down on your driveway or sidewalk which can replace minerals lost during winter months.
Their natural instincts to find food will make them a little more brave and willing to get closer to homes and humans if desirable food like apples, clover, and pumpkin are available. However, be sure to only put out a limited amount as a quick change in their diet can cause serious digestive problems for wild deer.

Backyard bees are becoming a common occurrence in many parts of the country.

As more people discover the joys of beekeeping, it’s not surprising that some homeowners find themselves with an unwanted swarm buzzing around their backyard.

While bees are free to fly around wherever they please, there are some steps you can take to keep bees out of your backyard.

The key is to understand what attracts bees into your yard and then implement strategies to discourage them from coming back.

How to Keep Bees Out of Your Yard

(opens in a new tab)" class="rank-math-link rank-math-link" rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://thebackyardmaster.com/wpautoterms/privacy-policy/" target="_blank">privacy policy.

To be completely honest with you, it’s hard for me to write this article.

Bees are an essential part of our ecosystem and our food supply.

Without bees, we would have a much harder time growing crops, and the world as we know it could change.

I get it, bees get a bad rap for being “aggressive” and some people don’t want them around their children or pets.

However, if someone in your household has a life-threatening allergy to bees or a severe phobia, I completely understand why you would want to keep bees out of your backyard.

You want your backyard to be and inviting and relaxing space for your family to enjoy.

The risk of a child or family member going into anaphylactic shock from an allergic reaction to a bee sting is more than enough of a reason to try to do whatever you can to keep bees as far away as possible.

I’m not saying that it’s easy to get rid of them, but I am going to provide you with advice on how to do so!

Before you take any action to get rid of the bees in your yard, consider these points:

– Bees are important pollinators, and they are a necessary part of our ecosystem.

– Not all species of bees sting.

– And since bees fly, there is no way you can guarantee a bee will not come into your yard.

However, if you have decided that keeping bees out of your backyard is necessary, it’s time to take action.

What Attracts Bees to Your Yard?

The first step to keeping bees out of your yard is understanding why they are there in the first place.

There has to be something attracting them or else they wouldn’t be there, right?

The following are common attractants for bees:

– Flowering plants—a bee’s favorite!

– A pool, birdbath, or fountain.

– Bird feeders filled with sugar water.

-Anything that smells like honey – including old hives that might still be around.

Bees might be transient visitors to your property. Meaning they aren’t there to stay, but instead they are just there to gather nectar or pollen from plants in your yard or getting some water from your sprinkler, then they’ll head back to their hive (to tell the others).

Other times scout bees may be looking for a place to build a new hive when their swarm expands due to colony growth. Honeybees like their hives to be protected and will find vents, crevices, eaves, and soffits to build their homes.

Either way, once you know what attracts the bees to your yard, it’s time to make some changes so that the bees don’t stick around.

How To Get Rid Of A Beehive In Your Yard:

If you have a beehive on your property, you will have bees in your yard.

If you have a hive of bees taking over your backyard, you need to get rid of them as quickly as possible.

If you don’t know how to get rid of a bee swarm or remove honeybees, get help immediately.

Do not attempt to get rid of them yourself unless you are an expert (or have one working with you).

Please do not spray chemicals or water on the bees. You do not want to kill them, you just want them to go somewhere else.

Killing bees is not a good idea because they are responsible for pollination and helping plants grow.

Even if you don’t want bees near your home for safety or personal reasons, you should still protect bees so they can do their important work within our ecosystem.

In fact, you may be able to find a beekeeper that will come and humanely relocate the swarm of bees for you by contacting American Beekeeping Federation or Apiary Inspectors of America.

If you get rid of the hive, they won’t be able to come back and will eventually move on to another location where there aren’t any humans trying get rid of them.

When a beehive is removed from an area, it’s critically important that all traces are gone. If not, other bees in the area will get the scent and be likely to return.

Be sure to get rid of all wax, honeycomb, and any other leftover parts that might be stuck in your siding or foundation.

And remember, even if you get rid of a beehive, bees may return to your yard if it is an attractive location for them to live and gather food.

In order to keep bees from making a new home on your property, you need to make sure your backyard is not an appealing place for them to build their hive.

– Keep your yard clean and free of debris that could be used as a home by bees or other pests, such as old appliances, woodpiles, trash cans, etc.

– Make sure all fruit from trees get picked up before it can ferment on the ground which will attract bees.

– Try to get rid of standing water in your yard like birdbaths, rain gutters, and flower pots. Bees love wet ground!

If you eliminate these things from your backyard you will be doing a great job at keeping bees out of the area and protecting yourself as well.

How to Get Rid of Bees in Your Backyard

If the bees in your yard are just visiting, it’s best to discourage them from coming back by implementing some changes around your home like:

– Removing flowering plants that attract bees – even if it’s just for that season.

– Putting hoses away when not in use so they don’t get filled with water and attract bees looking for a drink.

– Keeping garbage can lids on tight to avoid attracting scout bees searching for food.

– Trimming back trees and bushes that get close to your home so bees aren’t tempted to build their hive there.

-Don’t leave pet dishes outside overnight and get rid of old, rusty appliances that may attract bees looking for a home.

If the area is still an attractive place to live, there is no way you will get rid of the bees in your yard.

And this doesn’t just include flowering trees and flowerbeds. As you can see in the photo above, you’ll need to keep your lawn free of dandelions and other flowering weeds if you really want to make sure that bees aren’t attracted to your yard.

The Problem With Bee Traps

Many homeowners place bee traps around their property with the hopes of getting rid of the bees, but this is a bad idea because it doesn’t get rid of the problem.

Bee traps simply kill the bees that are in your yard, but they aren’t effective way to keep bees from being there in the first place..

In fact, you may have just made things worse by attracting more bees to your property who will keep coming back if they can find an easy source of food and water nearby.

If you put out bee traps without taking care of the real issue, which is what attracts them to the yard in the first place.

If there is no food or water in your yard for them to find, they will fly away and be less likely to return.

Placing bee traps in your yard without removing the flowering plants and sweet smells isn’t fair to the bees.

If you really don’t want to change your landscaping, but you want to stay protected from the bees consider a screened-in porch where you can sit and enjoy the backyard and still feel safe.

Final Thoughts

Getting rid of bees in your yard is not an easy task, but it can be done if you know what attracts them there in the first place.

If you get rid of their food source, water supply, and other attractants they won’t be hanging around for long.

Don’t forget that honeybees play an important role in our ecosystem and food supply.

They are responsible for pollinating plants that make fruits, vegetables, and other products we use every day.

While there is a risk of getting stung by a bee in your backyard, the truth is you can get stung anywhere.

However, if bees make you nervous or uncomfortable you’ll want to do everything you can to keep them out of your yard so you can enjoy your space.

Following the steps above will help reduce the likelihood of having bees in your yard.

Step 1: Be sure to keep grass 3.5-4 inches long to keep it greener in the summer

Step 2: Water 2-3 times a week for about an hour to encourage stronger root growth

Step 3: Use a pre-emergent and post-emergent weed control in the spring

Step 4: Be sure to aerate and overseed in the fall

2. Make your door pop!

Simply adjusting the color of your front door or even replacing an old door is an effective way to increase your home’s curb appeal. You can paint your door yourself for under $45 or even have someone else do it for under $100.

If you think it is time to update your door and replace it, be sure to always check with your HOA for painting and door replacement guidelines! Also, be sure to check out #4 below for adding door appeal!

3. Consider updating siding & gutters

Depending on the age of your home, you might want to consider addressing the siding and gutters seriously.

With so many new technologies, such as fiber-cement siding and alternative siding, you can add more color and durability to your home with ease. While replacing your siding is a little pricey, if your home is approaching that 25 year plus mark, it might be time to consider remodeling to update the exterior seriously.

The cool thing about gutters is that they now come in countless colors, and you can estimate gutters online. Out of all the possible exterior remodeling updates – gutters, siding, windows, doors, and roofing – gutters are by far the least expensive. You can re-gutter your home for under $1,200 on average.

The trend right now is a blue or white siding with black gutters!

4. Add some door & window decor

Adding a few garden boxes to your windows if you live in a condo or townhome is a cheap way to add color to the outside of your home, thus creating some more aesthetics.

Additionally, you can make or find affordable wreaths and doormats for each season

With so many holidays and seasons, decorating your doors and windows is a simple way to spruce up the front of your home.

5. Remove overgrown trees & bushes

Overgrown trees and bushes don’t add to your home’s appeal. They take from it. Whether you trim down your trees and bushes or remove them, opening up the front of your home will give your home more appeal. Just like the trends inside of your home that change, landscaping styles do too. Be sure to stay with the trends and to keep your plants trimmed, or take them out!

6. Don’t be afraid to paint!

Anything you can paint on the outside of your home is a simple way to add some street appeal to your home. Whether you repent the fascia boards, trim around your windows/doors, or, as we stated, the doors themselves – you can add some immediate appeal with a few paint strokes.

A fresh coat of paint on the trim is a good idea on any home over ten years old as a general rule of thumb. If your home is under ten years old, be sure to check out numbers eight and nine below!

7. Replace your windows.

On the list of curb appeal ideas, perhaps the most expensive option would be replacing your windows. The reason being is often, window replacement isn’t covered by insurance (unlike a roof) and is more of a cosmetic upgrade. However, just because it is expensive doesn’t mean upgrading your windows isn’t smart.

Pros to replacing your windows include increasing your home’s energy efficiency, updating the window styles, and adding tons of flare as far as curb appeal goes! New window colors, frames, and styles are expensive but worth considering!

8. Spray paint your shutters!

You can spray-paint your shutters, and it is a quick way not only to add curb appeal, but it is one of the cheapest options too! Buying spray paint isn’t that expensive, and you can add some flare to the outside of your home by simply spicing up your shutter colors!

Be sure to take down your shutters and add 1-2 coats of spray paint to each shutter. Once they are fully dry, put them back on your house! If you ever watch the hit HGTV show, Good Bones, they often use spray paint to make the shutters look updated!

9. Pressure wash the outside of your home

You keep the inside of your home clean by vacuuming, dusting, mopping, and even going as far as shampooing your carpets. So why don’t we always keep the outside of our home clean?

Pressure washing the exterior of your home is something you can do yourself or hire a contractor, but it is vital to complete every few years. Mold, algae, grime, and organic buildup can appear on your walkways, driveway, siding, roof, and windows. Depending on the size of your home, you can pressure wash your home in just a few hours. Be sure to always know the following things first:

Never pressure wash your shingle roof

Know the proper PSI per surface type to prevent any damage

Do your research before ever renting a pressure washer

10. Update your outdoor light fixtures

If you don’t have the money to get new siding, replace all your landscaping, or the time to paint your door – you can consider updating your outdated outdoor light fixtures. Outdoor light fixtures are easy to replace, and simply updating them can quickly add some curb appeal.

11. Ask insurance about your roof!

One of the most common homeowners insurance claims happens to be roof claims when storms impact shingles. Knowing this, simply having your roof inspected might mean you can get it replaced for filing a claim.

Now, you might be wondering why this is advantageous. A new roof typically has one of the highest returns on investments for starters, but new shingle styles look great. There are more color options and styles to choose from than ever before.

12. Complete the minor to-do list

Right now, I have a goal of touching up the trim around my front door, pulling the weeds in my yard, painting my shutters, and fixing one screen on a window.

This simple to-do list is nagging, but it is necessary when enhancing the outside of your home. Whether it is replacing lights, making those minor tweaks, or just moving some things elsewhere – go ahead and set out to complete your to-do list one weekend!

13. Add some color to your landscaping

Adding color to your landscaping with the help of some perennials is a cheap way to make your yard pop. The flowers you decide to use will mostly depend on a few factors:

Where you live

The season

Climate and weather conditions

14. Declutter the outside of your home

A simple and effective way to add curb appeal that costs $0 is to make sure your home and yard are decluttered. Consider these easy and quick ideas:

Keep trashcans on the side of your home or in a garage

Kids toys and bikes should be in your garage or the backyard

Old cars, boats, and other vehicles can be stored elsewhere

Garden and landscaping tools shouldn’t be in the front of your house

Take everything that is clutter off your porch

Be sure your windows are clear for viewing and not blocked by boxes on the inside of your home

Not only will these ideas save you money, but they will also add value to your home simply because of a cleaner, less cluttered appearance!

The process is simple when it comes to adding curb appeal – do it! First, consider selecting one or two from this list, implementing the strategy, then picking another. For example, perhaps you can start by:
